It’s important to play our part in fighting off the signs of aging both physically and mentally. Fortunately there’s more help available today than for those that have gone before us. There are so many invisible and visible changes when we become a senior that we have to learn to cope with and eventually love. How come everything starts to droop and we lose hair where we want it then it starts showing up where we don’t want it.
Some seniors manage to hang onto to their teeth and hair much longer than others. Losing hair is a big blow to self esteem for most because it does change your looks. Luckily bald is in and it looks good on a lot of men. However, thinning hair and hair loss in not only a problem for men, it’s a huge problem for a lot of women too and bald is not an option or a good look for most women. Those that do struggle with thinning hair are usually looking for ways that they can stop their hair falling out. Fortunately there are a number of options available to prevent hair loss and even help re-grow and or thicken what hair you have.
Losing teeth can happen even before you become a senior. The loss is often caused by gum disease and receding gums which generally happens more as you age so good oral hygiene is really important. If you are fanatical about brushing your teeth a lot keep in mind that you can actually brush your teeth too much so be careful not to overdo it. There are great dental procedures available if you can afford it but dental work is expensive and often what you want to get done and what you can afford are worlds apart. This is another reason why more and more people are combining a vacation with getting medical and dental procedures done at a much more affordable cost in other countries.
Once we are in our senior years we are more likely to lose height, memory, and bone density, even some of the padding from the bottom of our feet and yet with all this loss it’s very easy to gain extra pounds in places where they are not welcome. We get age spots, and veins become more prominent on hands and other areas. We get wrinkles, crow’s feet, rosacea, acne, and age spots but fortunately there is help to be had with red light therapy for skin. Eyebrows get sparse and unruly the list goes on. It’s all part of aging but there are always things we can do to delay and sometimes even prevent the inevitable so the sooner you start the better.
A change in the balance of hormones plays a huge factor in the changes that occur in our senior years. It’s quite popular now to work with someone on getting a better hormonal balance. Here are some of the things that we can do our selves, and I know that you’ve probably heard it a number of times before. It is to have healthy nutritional foods and drinks and to exercise for a minimum of 3 hours a week (not all at once though!) Mix up your exercise with some cardio like walking, bike riding, even dancing, and it’s important to add weight resistance. Experts say that you can quite quickly regain strength by doing regular weight resistance training and I’m sure you’ve already noticed that some things are more difficult than they used to be.
One thing for sure – whether you are a senior or not you cannot give into aging, you have to keep your body and mind active remember to get regular medical check up so that if anything does change with your health you can hopefully catch it before it gets out of hand. Stay involved with living life keep up your social connections. Find hobbies that you want to try, go out to classes and if you want to find a hobby that you can learn at home there are a number of quality reputable hobby courses on learn how to paint or play an instrument. Keep your mind active, feed it with new information; make your brain work. If you are a reader and don’t already have an ebook reader you may want to buy a kindle there are so many downloadable and affordable books available now on all sorts of topics. The great thing is that you can take the kindle with you wherever you go with all your books are accessible whenever you want them.
Aging is a given so while we are here we don’t have a choice it’s going to happen if it hasn’t already; so make the most of it. Don’t take being a senior too seriously and enjoy the ride but make it the best one that you possibly can!
