If you have Medicare and get SSI or get help from Medicaid paying your Medicare Part B premiums (or were eligible for either in all or part of this year), you automatically qualify for extra help paying Medicare prescription drug coverage costs. Medicare will send you a purple letter letting you know that you automatically qualify. Because you get SSI benefits or belong to a Medicare Savings Program, Medicare gives you extra help to pay your Medicare prescription drug coverage. You get it automatically when you join a Medicare drug plan.

If you don’t join a Medicare drug plan on your own, Medicare will enroll you in a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, to make sure you have coverage. Medicare sends you a green letter letting you know when your coverage will begin. You can switch to a different Medicare drug plan at any time.
