Below, we will go through not only who qualifies for Medicare but also other services such as “Extra Help”:

You must be age 65 to qualify for Medicare, unless you have a qualifying disability that allows you to apply early.

In addition, you must be a US citizen or a permanent legal resident.

You must have worked for 10 years and paid taxes into the Medicare system.

Eligible participants receive Medicare Part A, covering hospitalization, free of charge. Medicare Part B, which covers doctor visits, carries a monthly premium. For most people, this premium is $115.40 in 2011.

For low-income seniors who would have difficulty paying the monthly Part B premium, there is Medicare Extra Help which is offered at the state level.

This low-income subsidy is available for those meet the income requirements. For 2011, your income must be below $16,245 if you are single and $21,855 if you are married.

You can go to the Medicare website to apply for Medicare Extra help now.
